The Excelsior class stands among the most iconic starships ever produced by Starfleet. Originally developed in the late 23rd century as a successor to the Constitution class, the Excelsior was conceived as a larger, more capable starship and famously served as the testbed for Starfleet's experimental transwarp drive. The prototype, USS Excelsior NX-2000, represented the beginning of a design lineage that would remain in Starfleet service for generations.
Following the transwarp project's failure, the Excelsior's underlying spaceframe proved too useful to abandon. The design evolved into a versatile fleet workhorse, serving as an explorer, heavy cruiser, and command vessel well into the 24th century. The Enterprise-B variant, introduced in 2293, incorporated substantial external modifications, including additional impulse engines, changes to the secondary hull, and modified nacelles. The USS Enterprise-B would go on to become one of the most recognizable ships of the Excelsior lineage.
